CLASSES OFFERED AND LEVELS OF PROFICIENCY

SPANISH FOR GENERAL PURPOSES :

Beginning I & II
Upon completion of this level, students will be able to make basic conversation. They will be able to talk about themselves and others, and ask and answer questions about their personal history: place of origin, occupation, leisure activities, address and phone number, weather, time and date, and likes and dislikes. Basic grammar concepts are introduced and vocabulary building begins. Students start speaking in complete sentences in the Simple Present tense, Present Continuous Tense, and will be introduced to the Past tense.  They will be speaking Spanish 25%-50% of the time at this level.

Intermediate I, II & III
A variety of skill levels are availableAt this level, students are able to handle most uncomplicated communicative tasks and social situations. They can start, sustain, and close a general conversation. They can tell a short  connected story. Students are introducing themselves, ordering meals, asking directions, and making purchases. At the beginning of this level, there is still a strong grammatical emphasis; at the end the focus is on conversation, and speaking in connected paragraphs. Classes are now conducted entirely in Spanish. Intermediate students are reading articles and writing short compositions, all in Spanish. By the end of this level, most  common verb tenses have been covered and each student's vocabulary list is extensive. Students will be speaking Spanish up to 75%-100% of the time.

Advanced I, II & III
There is still more advanced grammar to be studied at this level, but the emphasis is on increasing the vocabulary  in different subjects. A typical class at this level will spend approximately 75% of class-time on conversation, and reading, and 25% on grammar. The advanced speaker is able to satisfy the requirements of everyday situations, routine work and school requirements. He or she can handle with more confidence complicated tasks such as complaining and apologizing. He or she can communicate facts and talk casually about topics of current public and personal interest. There is emerging evidence of the ability to support opinions, explain in detail and hypothesize. Students will be speaking Spanish virtually 100% of the time.

Maintenance
This is a reading, writing and conversation class for students beyond the Advanced level. In this class, students read and discuss Spanish literature, translate into Spanish, watch movies, and discuss current topics.
